Music and Us

Music is a universal language that connects cultures across the globe, yet each culture expresses itself through unique rhythms, melodies, and instruments. For this playlist, I’ve selected four music videos from diverse parts of the world, showcasing both traditional and modern elements of each culture.

For my first song, I have decided to pick Flamenco, a passionate and expressive genre originating in Andalusia, Southern Spain. It combines singing, guitar playing, dancing, and clapping to create an intensely emotional form of music. Flamenco’s roots lie in the Gypsy, Moorish, and Jewish cultures of Spain. Everything about Flamenco is extremely expressive and beautiful. The selection I’ve chosen is a fast-paced, upbeat example that showcases the intensity of the genre. What makes Flamenco unique is its ability to convey powerful emotion through the body and voice, creating an immersive experience for the audience. (traditional, Spain)

For my next genre choice, I decided to pick Pacific Island music. he traditional music of the Pacific Islands includes chanting, drumming, and stringed instruments . It is often performed in a group, with participants using body percussion and harmonizing vocals to convey stories and traditions. Each island has its own unique musical heritage, with some common themes and instruments that link them together. One of my favorite instruments is commonly used in this music genre, the ukulele. Many use this music genre to protect their land and culture and celebrate their land. (traditional, Polynesia)

For the next genre, I have decided to pick something more modern that a lot of us are familiar with. I have decided to choose K-POP for this next genre. K-Pop fuses traditional Korean sounds and modern pop influences, creating an exciting and globally influential genre. Its rapid rise in popularity shows the power of music, and how so many people worldwide have been listening to it. K pops roots come from the 1990s in South Korea which introduced modern Western influences like rap, hip-hop, and dance into Korean music. I chose to include a group most people are familiar with, Blackpink! (South Korea, modern)

For my final genre of music, I have decided to choose Bollywood! Bollywood music is a key component of Indian cinema and combines elements of classical Indian music, folk, pop, and electronic sounds. Throughout the decades, Bollywood music has shifted in style and instrumentation. Bollywood music is none of being upbeat, vibrant, and energetic. Bollywood films often incorporate songs at key moments in the plot. Music is used not only to entertain but also to express the emotions of the characters, advance the storyline, and create a connection with the audience. Songs can be part of a romantic sequence, a dramatic scene, or a festive celebration.

Overall, it was very fun exploring different genres of songs and different cultures for this assignment!

  1. My favorite song that you chose was the traditional Pacific Islands music. I love how this traditional music also conveys stories and is used for storytelling similar to the other cultures’ music we have learned about. Another thing I have noticed about many cultures and this culture too is that they use music to keep traditions and celebrate their heritage. Overall, great post!

Music & Me blog

Hello! My name is Avery Fulmore, and I am a freshman. I was born and raised in Louisville, KY, and music has always been a part of my life. My aunt played the violin in the professional orchestra in my city, which led me to want to play the violin, as well. I played for about three years, starting when I was 11. I also picked up the ukulele and piano around that time, but never got super good at them! I've always enjoyed listening to different types of music, and it's been a type of comfort for me growing up! I am also majoring in Psychology, and am a part of the field hockey team here at Converse! 1. My current go-to! This has been one of my favorite songs for a few years now, it is called Real Love Baby by Father John Misty. I would say it is more in the alternative genre, and it has a very calming vibe to it! The tempo is on the slower side. I would always listen to this song on car rides, doing homework, and my favorite place to listen to it at was the beach. This is one o...

Music and Gender

Growing up, it was always easy to tell what certain people thought certain genders should do, even when it came to music. Although, I grew up always listening to the music my dad played. This consisted of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, the Eagles, Journey, Aerosmith, etc. I have always been told by others that even listening to this type of music is not considered "feminine." I have always been a person to like all types of music, and always have thought the idea of certain genres belonging to a certain gender is incorrect. Obviously, not everyone had or has his mindset, but I remember a specific moment in the 4th grade when I was talking to a male classmate about my favorite song at that moment (that song being by Aerosmith.) I was met with a judgmental look and the words of "Girls don't listen to that."  I realized as a 9 year old how stereotypical the world can be, even at such a young age. It also goes both ways, I remember overhearing how it was too feminine fo...

Music and Family

As soon as this blog assignment was posted, I knew exactly the person I wanted to interview, my dad. Since my dad had such a strong affect on my music taste, I wanted to learn more about how his music taste came to be, and what affected his music taste! When he was growing up, he listened to a lot of classic and progressive rock of the 70’s and 80’s. (Which is not surprising, he really got me into this). When I asked him who had the most influence on his music taste, he said his friends had more of an influence than family regarding what he listened to. His opinion on the music today vs what he listened to and still listen to today has few musical similarities with todays genres. He states one of the biggest differences he hears is how musical sounds produced today seemingly rely heavily on technology. Whereas in classic rock, it relied heavily on instrumental skills, not technical tools. Most of his music consisted of rock music of the 70’s in high school and also progressive roc...
