Music and Family

As soon as this blog assignment was posted, I knew exactly the person I wanted to interview, my dad. Since my dad had such a strong affect on my music taste, I wanted to learn more about how his music taste came to be, and what affected his music taste!

When he was growing up, he listened to a lot of classic and progressive rock of the 70’s and 80’s. (Which is not surprising, he really got me into this). When I asked him who had the most influence on his music taste, he said his friends had more of an influence than family regarding what he listened to. His opinion on the music today vs what he listened to and still listen to today has few musical similarities with todays genres. He states one of the biggest differences he hears is how musical sounds produced today seemingly rely heavily on technology. Whereas in classic rock, it relied heavily on instrumental skills, not technical tools. Most of his music consisted of rock music of the 70’s in high school and also progressive rock such as Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake and Palmer.

When I questioned if he had to pick one band for the rest of his life to listen to, he picked Pink Floyd. He said their albums and sound were always his favorite. Their music has spanned decades while maintaining relevance, and their music is progressive and experimental creating unique sound. His favorite album, The Dark Side of the Moon album, was on billboard top 200 for 18 yrs. and continues to sell at incredible rate. I also grew up listening to this album, and to this day love it! He definitely influenced my music taste!

When I asked him which concerts he had been to, he had numerous: Pink Floyd, Boston, Styx, Journey, Electric Light Orchestra, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Police, Genesis, Van Halen, ZZ Top, Blue Oyster Cult, Black Sabbath, Steve Miller Band, Ted Nugent, Heart, Alice Cooper, Billy Joel, and Rush. He said he always loved the excitement of concerts, and he would often go with his brothers. Out of those concerts, he said his top three would be Pink Floyd, Boston, and Blue Oyster Cult. His number one, top favorite, is Pink Floyd. He said he will always have a special place for Pink Floyd, and because of that, I will too:)

The song I have attached is one of my dads favorite songs from the album The Dark Side of the Moon, called Time.

  1. Hi Avery, your interview was great! I also listen to Pink Floyd a lot but I might have to try Emerson Lake and Palmer as well! I agree that Pink Floyd albums are incredible and it is true that their music is so strong till this day for everyone that listens to them. The Dark Side of the Moon might be one of the greatest albums of all time and I think your dad has a great taste in music!!

  2. Hi Avery! I really like your dad's music taste, and it's very evident that he's had such a huge influence on you. Pink Floyd albums are pretty good, and although I've only ever heard The Dark Side of the Moon album, it's so iconic and so good. Billy Joel is also fire, and his album, The Stranger, is so good, specifically Vienna. I also think that it's so nice that he and his brothers would go to all those concerts. Thank you for sharing, Avery!

  3. Hey Avery, really liked your dad's interview. Love Pink Floyd and what an amazing album that is great taste from your dad. He is right about the old school instrumental sound that is not seen as much nowadays but it's amazing to see him acknowledge it and I'd have to agree it just isn't the same sometimes. Really good interview, thanks for sharing!

  4. I completely relate to your dad having a lot of influence on your music taste because I felt the same way about my mom, who I interviewed. I love how our parents can impact our music taste and our perception of music as a whole. I also enjoy how you spoke about Pink Floyd, who I do not normally listen to, and how their music is still your and your dad’s lives today.

Music & Me blog

Hello! My name is Avery Fulmore, and I am a freshman. I was born and raised in Louisville, KY, and music has always been a part of my life. My aunt played the violin in the professional orchestra in my city, which led me to want to play the violin, as well. I played for about three years, starting when I was 11. I also picked up the ukulele and piano around that time, but never got super good at them! I've always enjoyed listening to different types of music, and it's been a type of comfort for me growing up! I am also majoring in Psychology, and am a part of the field hockey team here at Converse! 1. My current go-to! This has been one of my favorite songs for a few years now, it is called Real Love Baby by Father John Misty. I would say it is more in the alternative genre, and it has a very calming vibe to it! The tempo is on the slower side. I would always listen to this song on car rides, doing homework, and my favorite place to listen to it at was the beach. This is one o...

Music and Gender

Growing up, it was always easy to tell what certain people thought certain genders should do, even when it came to music. Although, I grew up always listening to the music my dad played. This consisted of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, the Eagles, Journey, Aerosmith, etc. I have always been told by others that even listening to this type of music is not considered "feminine." I have always been a person to like all types of music, and always have thought the idea of certain genres belonging to a certain gender is incorrect. Obviously, not everyone had or has his mindset, but I remember a specific moment in the 4th grade when I was talking to a male classmate about my favorite song at that moment (that song being by Aerosmith.) I was met with a judgmental look and the words of "Girls don't listen to that."  I realized as a 9 year old how stereotypical the world can be, even at such a young age. It also goes both ways, I remember overhearing how it was too feminine fo...
